Are staking rewards taxable? In most countries that have issued guidance, yes. Staking rewards are generally treated as income when you receive them, valued at the market price on that day. Later, when you sell, swap or spend those coins, capital gains rules usually apply to any change in value since you received them. Interest from crypto lending is usually treated the same way: income when received, capital gains on disposal.
That's the general picture, but rules vary by country, change often, and are still being argued in court in the US. This guide explains the common approach, gives a worked example, covers the 2026 legal challenge and shares record-keeping tips. This is general information, not tax advice. How are staking rewards taxed?
Most tax authorities that have addressed staking take a two-step approach:
- When you receive a reward: it's treated as ordinary income. The amount is usually the coin's fair market value at the time you gain control of it.
- When you later dispose of it: selling, swapping or spending the coin is a taxable disposal. Your gain or loss is the difference between what you get and the value you already reported as income (your cost basis).
In the US, the IRS set out this position for staking in Revenue Ruling 2023-14: rewards count as income in the year you gain "dominion and control" over them. Many other countries apply similar income-on-receipt rules, though the details (and whether staking counts as a business activity) differ.
A worked example
Say you stake SOL and receive 1 SOL as a reward when SOL trades at $150.
- Income at receipt: $150 of income is reported for that year.
- Cost basis: that 1 SOL now has a $150 basis.
- Later sale at $200: you have a $50 capital gain.
- Later sale at $100: you have a $50 capital loss.
Illustrative numbers only. Your country may value rewards, timing or losses differently.
The tricky part is that staking pays small rewards often. On Solana, rewards arrive every epoch (every 2–3 days), which can mean well over a hundred small income events in a year, each needing its own value.
Are lending rewards taxed the same way?
Interest earned by lending crypto, including stablecoin lending of USDT or USDC, is generally treated as income when received. Because stablecoins aim to hold $1, the capital gain or loss when you dispose of them is usually small, but it isn't always zero.
Some extra points to check with an adviser:
- Depositing into or withdrawing from a lending pool may or may not be a taxable event, depending on how your country treats the tokens you receive in return.
- Custodial platforms may provide yearly statements; non-custodial positions are on-chain and you'll usually need to pull the records yourself.

What is the 2026 court case about staking taxes?
The IRS's income-on-receipt position is being challenged. In May 2026, three crypto nonprofit organisations filed an amicus brief in a lawsuit against the IRS, arguing that staking rewards are newly created property and should be taxed only when they are sold, not when they are received.
The case is unresolved. Until a court rules (or the law changes), the IRS's published guidance remains its position, and most tax professionals advise following it while keeping good records in case the rules change. If the challenge succeeds, it could affect how rewards are reported in future, but nobody can say yet.
Are staking rewards taxable outside the US?
Many countries tax staking rewards as income on receipt, but there's real variation:
- Some treat staking as miscellaneous income, others as business income if done at scale.
- Some tax rewards only when sold.
- Some have holding-period exemptions for capital gains.
- Some haven't issued clear guidance at all.
Because these rules change frequently, check your national tax authority's current crypto guidance or talk to a local adviser.
Does liquid staking change the tax treatment?
It can. Swapping a coin for a liquid staking token, and back again, may count as a taxable disposal in some countries, and rewards that show up as a rising token value can be treated differently from rewards paid as new coins. If you use liquid staking, ask an adviser how your country handles it. Background: liquid staking explained.
How to keep good records of staking rewards
Whatever your country's rules, good records make tax time far easier:
- Log every reward: date, coin, amount and the market value at that time.
- Log every disposal: sales, swaps and spending, with dates and values.
- Keep transaction IDs or exchange statements for each event.
- Export regularly rather than once a year. For non-custodial staking, your history is on the public block explorer (Solscan, Etherscan, Tronscan, BscScan).
- Track fees. Network fees and commission may affect your figures.
- Consider crypto tax software that imports wallet addresses and calculates values.
Note that on Tron, voting rewards must be claimed, so check with an adviser whether the claim date or the accrual date is what matters where you live.
Can you reduce tax on staking rewards?
We can't give tax advice, but people commonly ask their advisers about:
- Whether staking counts as personal or business activity
- How losses on coins can offset gains
- Whether holding periods change the capital gains rate
- Timing of disposals across tax years

Common questions
Do I pay tax on staking rewards if I don't sell?
Under the most common approach, including current IRS guidance, yes: rewards are income when you receive them, even if you never sell. A US lawsuit is challenging this, but it hasn't been decided.
How are staking rewards valued for tax?
Usually at the fair market value of the coin when you gain control of the reward. Keep a record of the price at each reward.
Is unstaking a taxable event?
Unstaking your own coins is generally not a sale. Selling or swapping them afterwards usually is. Rules vary, so check locally.
Is stablecoin lending interest taxable?
In many countries, yes, as income when received. See how to earn interest on USDT for how lending works.
Should I get a tax professional?
If you stake or lend regularly, it's worth it. Frequent small rewards make records complex, and rules are changing.
