Can you stake USDT? Not in the way you stake SOL or ETH. USDT (Tether) is a stablecoin token that runs on blockchains like Tron and Ethereum. It doesn't secure any network, so there's no proof-of-stake reward to earn. What people call "USDT staking" is almost always lending: you lend your USDT to borrowers and earn interest. That's a perfectly good way to earn on Tether, but it has different risks from real staking.
This guide explains why USDT can't be staked, what "USDT staking" offers really are, and how to earn on USDT safely. You can lend USDT (and USDC) from Virtex Wallet's crypto lending in custodial or non-custodial mode. This is general information, not financial advice.
Why can't USDT be staked?
Staking exists to secure proof-of-stake blockchains. Validators lock up the network's own coin (SOL on Solana, ETH on Ethereum, TRX on Tron) as collateral, and the network pays them new coins and fees for keeping it honest.
USDT is different:
- It's a token issued by a company, backed by reserves, and designed to stay at $1.
- It exists on many networks: TRC-20 on Tron, ERC-20 on Ethereum, and others.
- It plays no part in confirming blocks on any of them.
So there's no protocol that pays "USDT staking rewards". If you see that phrase, the yield comes from somewhere else. For how real staking works, see what is crypto staking.
What is "USDT staking" on apps and exchanges?
When an app advertises USDT staking, it's usually one of these:
- Lending. Your USDT is lent to borrowers, often traders who post collateral. They pay interest, and you get most of it.
- A fixed-term savings product. Your USDT is locked for a set time for a set rate, and the platform lends or deploys it.
- A promotion. A temporary boosted rate paid by the platform to attract deposits.
- A scam. "Stake USDT and earn 2% a day" is not a real product. No legitimate source pays that.
Options 1 to 3 can be legitimate. Always ask: who is paying the interest, and who holds my USDT?
How do you earn interest on USDT?
The honest answer is stablecoin lending:
- You deposit USDT into a lending pool.
- Borrowers lock up collateral worth more than they borrow, then borrow USDT.
- They pay interest, which goes to lenders.
- If a borrower's collateral falls in value, it's sold to repay the loan.
Rates have typically been roughly 2% to 8% a year, rising when borrowing demand is high and falling when it's low. They change constantly. The full mechanics are in what is crypto lending, and the step-by-step is in how to earn interest on USDT and USDC.
Is lending USDT safe?
Lending USDT is not risk-free. Know these before you start:
- Platform or smart-contract risk. If a custodial provider fails, or a lending contract is exploited, you could lose funds.
- Depeg risk. USDT aims to stay at $1, but it can trade slightly below its peg in stressed markets.
- Liquidity risk. If most of a pool is borrowed, withdrawals may have to wait until loans are repaid.
- Rate changes. Today's rate may not be next month's.
Lower your risk by lending only what you can leave alone for a while, keeping some USDT unlent for spending, and understanding whether your lending is custodial or non-custodial.
USDT lending vs staking TRX: which is better?
If you hold USDT on Tron, there's a related option: stake TRX instead. Staking TRX gives you Energy, which pays for USDT TRC-20 transfers, plus voting rewards. It doesn't earn interest on your USDT, but it can cut the cost of sending it to almost nothing.
| Lend USDT | Stake TRX | |
|---|---|---|
| What earns | Your USDT | TRX you hold |
| Earnings | Interest in USDT | TRX voting rewards + Energy for fees |
| Price exposure | Low (dollar-pegged) | Yes, TRX price |
| Getting it back | Pool liquidity or provider terms | 14-day unstaking period |
| Best for | Earning on idle dollar balances | Frequent USDT TRC-20 senders |
Many Tron users do both. See how to stake TRX and the USDT TRC-20 wallet guide.
How to spot a fake "USDT staking" offer
Stablecoin yield scams are common because USDT feels safe. Walk away if you see:
- Fixed daily returns, such as "1% a day" or "earn 30% a month"
- Referral pressure, where you earn more by bringing in friends
- A website or app you reached through a DM, group chat or ad
- Withdrawal "fees" or "taxes" you must pay before you can get your USDT back
- Requests for your seed phrase or to sign an unfamiliar approval
Real stablecoin lending pays variable, modest rates, and you can see where the interest comes from.
Can you stake USDC?
Same answer as USDT: USDC is a stablecoin token, not a proof-of-stake coin, so it can't be staked. You can lend it in the same way. Virtex Wallet's lending supports USDT and USDC only.
How to start lending USDT in Virtex Wallet
- Install Virtex Wallet from Google Play.
- Pick non-custodial mode (lend from your own keys, verifiable on-chain) or custodial mode (Virtex manages lending for you). (Custodial mode isn't available in the EEA, the UK or the USA.)
- Deposit USDT on a supported network. Double-check the network before sending (TRC-20 and ERC-20 are not interchangeable). Moving from an exchange? Use our exchange-to-wallet transfer guide.
- In non-custodial mode, keep a little of the network's coin (for example TRX or ETH) for transaction fees.
- Open USDT and choose the lending option.
- Review the current rate, any fee and the withdrawal terms, then confirm.
Rates shown in the app are current estimates and will change.
Common questions
Can I stake USDT on Tron?
No. On Tron you stake TRX, not USDT. You can lend USDT TRC-20 to earn interest, or stake TRX to get Energy for cheaper USDT transfers.
What is the best way to earn on USDT?
Stablecoin lending is the most common way. Choose based on who holds your coins, how withdrawals work and the current rate, not just the highest number.
Is "USDT staking" a scam?
Not always. Many "USDT staking" products are really lending or savings products. But any offer of very high fixed daily returns is a red flag.
Can I lose money lending USDT?
Yes, through provider failure, smart-contract exploits or a stablecoin depeg. These risks are why lending is not risk-free.
Do I pay tax on USDT interest?
In many countries, lending interest counts as income. See are staking rewards taxable. This is not tax advice.
