To swap USDT to TRX, open your wallet's Swap screen, choose USDT as the coin you're paying with and TRX as the coin you want, enter an amount, check the rate, fees and minimum, and confirm. The TRX lands in the same wallet. In Virtex Wallet this takes a few taps and you don't need an exchange account.
The most common reason people do this swap is simple: you can't send USDT on Tron without TRX.
Why you need TRX to send USDT TRC20
USDT on Tron is a TRC-20 token. Every transfer of it is a Tron transaction, and Tron charges fees in its own resources:
- Energy, used by token transfers such as USDT.
- Bandwidth, used by every transaction.
If your account doesn't have enough Energy or Bandwidth, the network burns TRX to cover the cost. If you have no TRX at all, the transfer fails. That's why a wallet holding 500 USDT and 0 TRX is stuck until it gets some TRX.
You can get TRX by buying it, receiving it from someone, or swapping a little of your USDT. Swapping is usually the quickest when the USDT is already in your wallet.
Step-by-step: swap USDT to TRX in Virtex Wallet
- Install Virtex Wallet from Google Play and open your wallet.
- Tap Swap.
- Choose USDT as the "from" asset and TRX as the "to" asset.
- Enter how much USDT you want to swap.
- Review the quote. The app compares quotes across third-party swap providers and shows the rate, fees and minimum amount before you confirm.
- Confirm the swap.
- The TRX appears in your wallet once the transaction completes, and you'll get a notification.

Which USDT can you swap from?
Your USDT doesn't have to be on Tron already. If a swap provider can quote the pair, you can swap USDT on another supported network (for example Ethereum) into TRX. Bear in mind:
- Swapping from ERC-20 USDT needs a little ETH for the Ethereum network fee.
- Swapping from TRC-20 USDT on a wallet with zero TRX may not be possible, because sending the USDT is itself a Tron transaction. In that case, swap from another network, or receive a small amount of TRX first.
How much TRX should you keep?
There's no single right number, because Tron fees depend on network conditions and on whether the receiving address has held USDT before. A practical approach:
- Keep enough TRX for several transfers rather than just one, so you're never stuck.
- Check the fee estimate in the app before each send.
- If you send USDT often, consider staking TRX for Energy. Staked TRX gives you Energy that covers transfers instead of burning TRX each time.
Mistakes to avoid
- Swapping your last TRX away. If you swap TRX into something else, leave enough behind for fees.
- Mixing up networks. TRX lives on Tron. Don't send TRX to an Ethereum or BNB Smart Chain address. Read the USDT TRC20 wallet guide for how networks differ.
- Ignoring the minimum. Swaps have a minimum amount. Very small swaps may not be quoted.
- Only looking at the rate. Compare the amount you'll actually receive after fees.
Common questions
Can I swap USDT to TRX without an exchange? Yes. An in-wallet swap does it in one step: no deposit, trade and withdrawal. See how to swap crypto in a wallet for the general process.
How long does a USDT to TRX swap take? It depends on the provider and the networks involved. Same-network swaps are usually quicker than cross-network ones. The app notifies you when it's done.
Can I swap TRX back to USDT later? Yes, the same way: pick TRX as the "from" asset and USDT as the "to" asset.
Is swapping USDT to TRX taxable? In many countries a crypto-to-crypto swap counts as a disposal. Rules vary, so check your local guidance.
