You can't move USDT from ERC-20 to TRC-20 by sending it to a Tron address. ERC-20 USDT lives on Ethereum and TRC-20 USDT lives on Tron: they're separate tokens on separate blockchains. To switch networks you need a cross-network swap (USDT on Ethereum → USDT on Tron) or an exchange that lets you deposit on one network and withdraw on the other. In Virtex Wallet you can do the swap in the app, where a provider can quote the route.

Why people move USDT from ERC-20 to TRC-20

  • Lower fees. Sending USDT on Tron usually costs less than on Ethereum, where gas can be expensive.
  • The recipient wants TRC-20. Many people and services prefer USDT on Tron for everyday transfers.
  • Consolidation. You received USDT on Ethereum but keep the rest of your USDT on Tron.

Why the network has to match

A Tron address (starting with T) isn't valid on Ethereum, so most wallets won't even let you send ERC-20 USDT to one. The real danger is elsewhere: withdrawing from an exchange on the wrong network, or mixing up EVM networks that share the same 0x address. Funds sent on the wrong network can be hard or impossible to recover. Always match the network on both sides; our exchange-to-wallet guide explains how.

Option 1: cross-network swap in Virtex Wallet

  1. Install Virtex Wallet from Google Play and open your wallet.
  2. Make sure you have a little ETH for the Ethereum network fee, since the swap starts on Ethereum.
  3. Tap Swap.
  4. Choose USDT (Ethereum / ERC-20) as the "from" asset.
  5. Choose USDT (Tron / TRC-20) as the "to" asset.
  6. Enter the amount and review the quote. Virtex Wallet compares quotes across third-party swap providers and shows the rate, fees and minimum amount.
  7. Confirm. The TRC-20 USDT arrives on your Tron address in the same wallet.

Then get some TRX so you can send the USDT on Tron later. See how to swap USDT to TRX.

Option 2: through an exchange

  1. Deposit ERC-20 USDT to your exchange account, choosing ERC20 as the network.
  2. Withdraw USDT to your Tron address, choosing TRC20 as the network.

This works if you already use an exchange, but it means two transfers, the exchange's withdrawal fee and waiting for the deposit to credit.

Fees to expect

  • Ethereum gas (in ETH) to send or swap your ERC-20 USDT.
  • The provider's rate and fees, shown in the quote.
  • Tron fees (in TRX) the next time you send the TRC-20 USDT.

Because Ethereum gas varies, moving very small amounts may cost more than it saves. Check the amount you'll receive before confirming.

Common questions

Can I convert TRC-20 USDT back to ERC-20? Yes, with the same kind of cross-network swap in reverse, where a provider can quote it. You'll need TRX for the Tron fee.

Is ERC-20 USDT worth the same as TRC-20 USDT? Both aim to track the US dollar 1:1. The difference is the network, fees and where each is accepted.

Do I need two wallets? No. A multi-chain wallet like Virtex Wallet holds USDT on Ethereum and on Tron in one app.

Hold USDT on both networks in one app: see the USDT TRC20 wallet and Ethereum wallet pages, or download Virtex Wallet on Google Play. This article is general information, not financial advice.
