The unstaking period is the waiting time between asking for your staked coins back and being able to spend them. Depending on the network it's also called the unbonding period, cooldown or exit queue. On the four most popular staking networks it ranges from about one epoch (2–3 days) on Solana to 7 days on BNB Chain, 14 days on Tron, and anywhere from hours to weeks on Ethereum, depending on demand.

During that wait your coins usually earn no rewards and can't be sold. This guide explains how long unstaking takes on each network, why the wait exists, and how to plan around it. For the basics, see what is crypto staking. This is general information, not financial advice.

How long does unstaking take?

Your wallet You keep your SOL

Blockchain Confirms blocks, pays rewards
↺ Rewards flow back to your wallet every epoch, minus the validator's commission
How native staking works: your coins never leave your wallet. You delegate their weight.
Network What it's called Typical wait Rewards during wait?
Solana (SOL) Deactivation About 1 epoch (2–3 days) No
Ethereum (ETH) Exit queue + withdrawal Hours to weeks, depending on how many validators are exiting No
Tron (TRX) Unstaking period 14 days No
BNB Chain (BNB) Unbonding period 7 days No

Why is there an unstaking period?

Waiting periods aren't there to annoy you. They protect the network:

  • They stop "hit and run" attacks. If validators could misbehave and pull their stake out instantly, they'd escape penalties. A waiting period means stake can still be slashed for recent bad behaviour.
  • They keep the validator set stable. If huge amounts of stake could leave at once, the network's security could drop suddenly.
  • They give the network time to process changes, such as recalculating who validates which blocks.

So the unstaking period is part of what makes staking rewards possible in the first place.

How long does it take to unstake Solana?

Solana stake deactivates at the end of the current epoch. Epochs last roughly 2–3 days, so depending on when in the epoch you unstake, the wait is anywhere from a few hours to about three days. After deactivation, you withdraw the SOL from the stake account to your main balance.

During very busy periods, Solana limits how much stake can deactivate in a single epoch, so very large amounts can occasionally take a little longer. Full guide: how to stake Solana.

How long does it take to unstake ETH?

Ethereum has an exit queue. Validators leaving the network line up, and only a limited number can exit per epoch. When few are leaving, exits can complete within hours to a day or two. When many leave at once, the queue can stretch to weeks. After exiting, there's a further short delay before the ETH arrives in the withdrawal address.

How it works for you depends on the staking method you use; pooled options follow the same queue for withdrawals. Plan for the slow case. Guide: how to stake ETH without 32 ETH.

How long does it take to unstake TRX?

On Tron, unstaked TRX enters a fixed 14-day waiting period under Stake 2.0. During that time, it earns no voting rewards and provides no Energy or Bandwidth, and your votes are reduced. After 14 days, you withdraw the TRX to your available balance. Tron limits how many separate unstake requests can be pending at once, so it's simpler to unstake in one go. Guide: how to stake TRX.

How long does it take to unstake BNB?

BNB has a 7-day unbonding period. Your BNB stops earning when you undelegate, and you can claim it back after the 7 days. If you only want to switch validators, BNB Chain lets you redelegate without waiting out the full unbonding, which is useful if your validator's performance drops. Guide: how to stake BNB.

Can you skip the unstaking period?

Sometimes, at a cost:

  • Liquid staking tokens can be swapped for the underlying coin almost instantly on a decentralised exchange, but you may get slightly less than full value, especially in a falling market. See liquid staking explained.
  • Custodial services may offer faster access in some cases, depending on their own liquidity and terms.

With native staking, the network's waiting period applies.

How to plan around unstaking periods

  • Keep an emergency buffer unstaked. Never stake money you might need within the unstaking window.
  • Know the wait before you stake. If you might need funds within two weeks, a 14-day Tron unstake is the wrong fit.
  • Unstake early if you're planning a big expense. Start the clock before you need the money.
  • Remember the price risk. The market can move a lot during a 7- or 14-day wait, and you can't sell until it ends.
  • Keep fees available. Unstaking and withdrawing are transactions. Leave some of the coin unstaked to pay for them.
  • Split between networks if fast access matters: some SOL (short wait) alongside longer-lock coins.

Shorter unstaking periods are one reason people choose one coin over another. Compare them in best crypto to stake, and see how waits affect your returns in is crypto staking worth it?

How to unstake in Virtex Wallet

  1. Open the staked coin in Virtex Wallet.
  2. Tap Unstake and enter the amount.
  3. Review the waiting period shown and confirm.
  4. When the wait ends, withdraw or claim the coins back to your available balance (on Solana, Tron and BNB Chain this is a separate step).

In non-custodial mode, every step is an on-chain transaction you can check on the network's block explorer. In custodial mode, Virtex handles it for you. (Custodial mode isn't available in the EEA, the UK or the USA.) See all staking options on the crypto staking page.

Common questions

Do I earn rewards while unstaking?

No. On Solana, Ethereum, Tron and BNB Chain, coins stop earning once you start unstaking.

Can I cancel an unstake?

On some networks you can restake or redelegate instead of waiting, for example redelegating on BNB Chain. Rules differ by network and method.

Why is my ETH unstake taking so long?

Ethereum's exit queue limits how many validators can leave per epoch. When many people exit at once, the queue grows.

Is my crypto safe during the unstaking period?

In native, non-custodial staking, your coins stay under your control during the wait. The main risk is that the price can move while you can't sell.

Which crypto has the fastest unstaking?

Of the four major networks covered here, Solana, at about one epoch (2–3 days).
